Weight loss coupons are samples of the structures metal that are connected to through a very low resistance conductor and represent a coating fault of known dimensions that is subject to the corrosion reaction at that location.
I have been required to recover and analyse weight loss coupons and this requires skills that are rarely available in technicians and field engineers who have no guidance in the proceure for doing this.
The problem is that the measurement itself must be made in a laboratory equipt with weighing device with extreme accuracy.
The coupon must be weighed when washed with distilled water and then after the corrosion products have been removed and weighed.
From the data acquired by this process can be used to calculate a corrosion rate over time.
During the construction and primary use of the facility that I built for Valdir at Guararema, SP State Brazil, I installed coupons that can be monitored in situe. These are described in detail in my reports.
