THE PRESENT STATUS
There are claimed to be over 30,000 members of organisations who are engaged in corrosion control and these are relying on scientific papers that have been presented to a few hundred people for 'peer review'. This group of specialists then filter all information and claim that this makes it valid.
When recommended practices prove impractical or corrosion failures occur in spite of approved methodology, academia becomes defensive and consolidates against innovation.
Corrosion is not being controlled because money is dominating those who want to study and practice the science of corrosion control.
The world is in a state of political and financial chaos at this time and this is affecting the progress of science and engineering to the detriment of everyone.
Social media has changed the established structure of academia and knowledge transferand we can now exchange ideas, information and data without editors and publishers.
We each have an individual timeline of experience that results in knowledge and understanding that provides a unique perspective from which we observe our part of the universe and form our own opinions.
The science of electrochemistry, including corrosion, is governed by the rules of nature and not the regulations of humans. The universe does not recognise human borders, language, religion, tribes, nationalities or politics. Those of us who study, codify and understand the laws of nature are in a powerful position as we can cause physical adjustments to human environments that impact on everyone, no matter how rich and powerful they think they are.
The established structure of academia cannot possibly keep up with the scientific advances of millions of intelligent brains that are now communicating freely through the internet.
We now have a means to progress beyond this blockage through the availablity of mass individual communications. The internet was designed to survive in the event of nuclear conflict destroying major parts of the communications network. The result has been described as an ocean of ideas in which each idea has a life of it's own, hence the term 'viral'. When we transmit an idea through the internet it can be likened to pouring a bucket of water into a lake which somebody else can take out from the other shore of the lake. This is not magic, it is mathematics and is achieved by aps that set switches on or off. This has the advantage of a set of instructions having to answer the question 'true or false' at every step of the path to the solution of any problem.
The World Wide Web is a set of aps that make it possible for all computers to 'talk' to each other. Any information that is put into the WWW is immediately avalable to every connected computer. The energy to sustain this information comes from millions of sources and the paths through which the information passes form a matrix of massive proportions. The whole thing is three dimensional and cannot be controlled from any point.
THE WAY FORWARD
We must register those who want to be involved in the control of corrosion to networks of pipelines.
We must carry out a global audit of available resources.
We must define the global problem.
We must advertise ourselves and the problem we can resolve.
If a scientist has an idea, it can be broadcast onto the internet for the scrutiny and approval of everyone without editors or publishers. We need to supply evidence to support our theories so that they are taken into practice by the people whose cash flow passes through the pipelines that are presently leaking.
We must market our propasal as the only alternative to the established system.
We have to produce data that shows clearly that the present system is failing in terms of profit for investors. We can do that by gathering all reports of pipeline failures and corrosion related incidents globally. We must do this from a local level upwards through to the actual official reports.
